Joe is a senior at Millard West and is back for his third year on the staff of the CATalyst and MWHS Wildcat News. This year he looks forward to covering all the sports throughout Millard West. Outside of journalism, Joe enjoys playing baseball, running cross country, and hanging out with his friends.

Senior Sadie Millard celebrates after becoming the state champion of the 400 meter dash. Millard finished with a time of 56.80 seconds, and added to a strong showing from the girls team all around. “I couldn't be more proud of my teammates,” Millard said. “Each one of them came out and gave their all in each of their races. We have gotten super close this season and I will always be super proud no matter how they run or what place they get.”

The Wildcats celebrate a big win earlier in the season against Millard North. This year the Cats finished with a regular season record of 24-5, and they will be a number one seed in their District tournament bracket, however there is always room for improvement. “I think we need to score more runs in the middle innings,” senior Sam Novotny said. “We usually put up runs in the first and last couple innings but I think it would really help if we could put a few more runs on the scoreboard for the middle innings and put more pressure on the other team.”

On Tuesday, Ferguson tossed four innings, only allowing one hit and one earned run en route to the win. “I definitely could have done a better job with holding the runners on,” Ferguson said. “It [the win] gives me more motivation to keep earning starts and keep doing my thing now that I'm finally getting settled in.”

Driessen totaled three hits in three at bats as well as four RBI’s. “We were able to put the ball in play, limiting strikeouts and giving us a good shot to get on base,” Driessen said. “We just need to continue to get better and learn from the few mistakes that we made in the Elkhorn South game.”

Although the Wildcats could not come out with a win they will hope to put this loss behind them as they look to bounce back in the Metro Tournament. “Going into Metros we have to just forget about this game,” Driessen said. “We just need to focus on doing what we can to win games.”

Blair wrestled through four different matches en route to capturing the 182 pound weight class state title. “Yes, absolutely I was confident,” Blair said. “As a freshman I got third at the state tournament and won districts. I'm always excited to compete and it's a blessing to have the opportunity to even walk or breathe right.”

Sophomore Noah Blair wrestled his way to a second place in his District weight class. Blair also used his District loss as motivation throughout the State tournament. “Honestly, I was a little bit stunned at districts,” Blair said. “The loss stung a little obviously because I always expect to win when I step out on that mat, that was also my first high school loss ever that was by more than two points I believe and it was humbling.”

The big win gives them confidence as they get ready for a big rivalry game against Millard South. “The girls know we can compete with anyone in the state,” head coach Marc Kruger said. “We just haven't been able to break through and finish off a really good opponent. Hopefully this game can serve as a lesson that we can't take possessions off and need to be ready to play our brand of basketball for all four quarters.”

Although the Wildcats offense was able to put up a decent amount of points, a tough third quarter both offensively and defensively hindered the Wildcats chances to come away with a victory. “They came out in the second half with a lot of energy and they used that to their advantage,” Moore said. “We also had some empty offensive possessions in the third and they also took advantage of that.”

The Millard West Girls Wrestling team takes on a dual with Marian. With this being the first year of the team they hope to improve and better their skills throughout the season. “My goal for the whole team is to better themselves every day,” senior Macy Klein said. “Wrestling is demanding, physically and mentally, and I believe that it will make all of us exceptionally better people and leaders. It will show, and has shown, that each of us are strong, capable and resilient no matter the circumstances.”

Kolar totaled 12 points on four for four shooting behind the three point line, however, with many new faces on the Wildcats team the win means more than personal stats. “For almost all of us, this is our first time playing real varsity minutes,” Kolar said. “It was important to get the first-game nerves out of the way. It feels great to be growing closer together as a team and to get a win. We're learning each other's skills and it's beginning to translate into success.”

In such a big and competitive meet runners are dealing with a lot of emotions throughout the race. “It was a little nerve racking,” sophomore Jack Witte said. “It was a fun experience and I got to see competition from all over and got to see how I compared to lots of great runners. Overall it was a fun, different, and cool experience.”

The Millard West Varsity Volleyball team came up just short of capturing the state title. Although they came up just short their season was nothing short of spectacular and many memories were made throughout it. “I am so grateful to have the season we did as a senior, this year by far was my favorite year out of my four years being on varsity,” senior Ella Hazen said. “All 12 of us girls bonded like no other and we always had the best time with each other on and off the court. Sad to say that it is over but I am super proud of each and every girl on the team. We couldn’t have accomplished what we did without every player.”

Although the Wildcats ended up losing this game, it taught them plenty of lessons they can use during the last few games of the season. “These last few games we can work on playing through adversity and when things aren’t going well, and how we respond,” Rongisch said. “The game is all about failure, but it’s what you do after that’ll make you better.”

We also know that we’re looking good to win the state championship and maybe finish top two team wise at Nike Cross Regionals to be the first Nebraska team to ever make Nike Cross Nationals.”

"The atmosphere from the time we came out of the tunnel was unlike anything any of us have felt," said New England Patriots cornerback Jason McCourty. “You can't really envision what an NFL game is like without fans. This felt more like a high school scrimmage.”

Their attitudes are a big factor of their success.”

I also like their business building and program.”

The Wildcats’ were able to start this race strong which allowed them to stay up front the entire race. “The start is one of the most crucial parts of the race, and could be argued the most important part,” Marshall said. “A good start is needed in order to get a good placement because being out in the front of the pack allows for better pacing, and it is easier to pass people ahead of you when you aren't in a large group.”
