Cheering for the first touchdown of the year, senior Jacclyn Smidlien and friends jump and scream in excitement. This was a special moment for the group as they’ve waited four years to get that front row spot. “It was such a fulfilling moment, Smidlien said. “Getting to cheer for our football team, year after year, has been so much fun, and I can’t wait to do it for the rest of the season.”

Due to COVID the student section had been gone for some time. In its return they’ve made national headlines, being featured on many verified sports accounts like ESPN, Overtime, the Checkdown and USA Football. “It is nothing but school spirit in the student section,” senior Brooke Sliva said. “Sometimes it gets a little crazy, you bump into the person next to you and by the end of the game your voice is completely gone.”

Pep band performing in the bleachers for a basketball game. Many of these students being seniors, they are enjoying their last year playing for the school.
“Even when we weren't sure if we were ever going to perform our show or have any concerts, though, we still supported our classmates,” senior Natalie Jaworski said. “I think that's the big takeaway of what we've been doing this year: even though things aren't the same, they're still really special, because at every level, from students to parents to staff, we want them to be special.”

Millard West’s student section always shows up ready to support. As shown above, the stands are always filled completely from top to bottom with students all decked out in the game’s theme. Without the energy of the student section and cheerleaders together, the games are not the same. The whole experience of football games comes from the atmosphere and the liveliness of the crowd.
