Reece Straley, Staff Reporter

Reece is a junior at Millard West and in his second year on the journalism team. He is excited to work with sports and filming broadcasts about things all over Millard West. In his free time he enjoys playing lacrosse, hanging out with friends, and playing with his dog. He is excited to improve his skills and put out entertaining broadcasts.

West has a difficult season up ahead and coaches and players both notice this opportunity to shine. “We have a very tough schedule this year,” said head coach William Morrison. “Our defense needs to continue to get better. We need to find ways to score more points too.” Coaches aren’t the only ones who see the season ahead as players have a lot of faith for the season. “I feel like we will be able to compete with any team as long as we come to play,” senior Chole Kirschner said. “Once we get our injured players back we should be ready to get some big games.”

“We were proud that this team and group of seniors led us to our 12th straight appearance at the state tournament,” head coach Joe Wessel said. “We did some great things but just came up short. I think we made it an exciting game in sets 3 and 4. Next year we have to replace some great seniors but we look forward to getting back to training and helping these student athletes continue to buy into the Wildcat way.”

The Wildcats season was stopped in the first round of playoffs this year. Coaches saw some things that led to this loss. “Defensively, they got a little too much push on us up front and we missed too many chances to make plays during the course of the game, said head coach Kirk Peterson. “Offensively, we didn't score when we had chances and we had plenty. That's what is so frustrating about losing a game like that, we had our chances and didn't take advantage of them.”

The Wildcats were able to secure their first win early in the season. Coaches saw a lot of improvement from the first 2 losses to Millard South and Omaha North. “We didn't really do anything outstanding - everyone just did their job on each individual play,” said coach Kirk Peterson. “In terms of improvement - fundamentals - games are won when teams are fundamentally sound - line up correctly and know and complete your assignment in all three phases of the game.”
