Senior David James Schiemann started in his third game of the season and looked for his first win of the season. The Wildcats were coming off a shutout loss to rival Millard South. “When we played Westside this week we were confident going into the game even though they were ranked first in the state," Schiemann said. “I thought that we played much better than we did against Millard South. Kerkman and Pockharel are looking up at the ball with Kerkman getting ready to spike the ball.. Elkhorn South had hit it over but it got saved. From that, Pockharel set the sike up. “I think the win was something that we really needed. We had been losing for a while,” Kerkman said. “ We had played them before and last time they beat us and we had to beat them this time.”

The Wildcats were able to secure their first win early in the season. Coaches saw a lot of improvement from the first 2 losses to Millard South and Omaha North. “We didn't really do anything outstanding - everyone just did their job on each individual play,” said coach Kirk Peterson. “In terms of improvement - fundamentals - games are won when teams are fundamentally sound - line up correctly and know and complete your assignment in all three phases of the game.”

Early in the game, the Spartans took the lead and gave the Wildcats a complication. This made Millard West adjust their gameplay to stop Lincoln East’s shots. “Their best player started out scoring the first seven points,” coach William Morrison said. “Most games start off close in the first quarter, so we weren’t worried. We made an adjustment to how we guarded him, and it seemed to work.”

For their first competition of the season being completely virtual, the girls look forward to hopefully being able to compete in person. “I think it makes it a little harder to get a feel for what a comp day is really like, especially for the freshman,” senior Delaney Cutler said. “Luckily on the showcase night, we had a good amount of people in the crowd yelling with us which really helped us out.”

After their performance, the teams were awarded with blue and gold ribbons to award them for their knowledge of the material. “I really liked our chant this summer,” junior Brenna Matthews said. “It involved a lot of fun motions that are different from our traditional cheer motions.”
