Senior Neleigh Gessert dropped 27 points in the season opener against Millard North. Neleigh Gessert also led the team with seven rebounds and had three steals behind her sister who had four. “It was a good team win with everyone doing what was drawn up in our game plan”, Neleigh Gessert said. ”We definitely had moments of struggle on the offensive side of the ball, but that was mainly because it was the first game of the season for us. We were able to get hot at the right time and played great defense the whole night.”

Senior Chance Roberts was able to record one interception in the shutout win against Lincoln North Star. Roberts and company kept the Navigators off the scoreboard multiple times late to seal the low scoring game on senior night. “As a defense we are all really close, so it is easy to play with and for each other,” Roberts said. “ Our coaches do a great job of keeping us focused on the goal. As a unit we understand what we have to do to win.”

Senior David James Schiemann started in his third game of the season and looked for his first win of the season. The Wildcats were coming off a shutout loss to rival Millard South. “When we played Westside this week we were confident going into the game even though they were ranked first in the state," Schiemann said. “I thought that we played much better than we did against Millard South. It was a good bounce back week against a good Westside team and we are excited to play Creighton Prep after knowing what we can do.”

Senior Sierra Pokharel plays her third season on varsity. This year she was named as one of the team captains making it her 2nd straight year as a captain for the team. “One big thing that helps me deal with the pressure and expectations is to enjoy and experience it,” Pokharel said. “I know after the season is over I will give anything to go back to high school and play this kind of volleyball so although a lot of pressure is on me, it’s also a privilege and I would not want it any other way.”

For their final home game of the season, the Millard West Wildcats (green) took on the Bryan Bears (white) in a senior night matchup. After the half, many of the younger players got more experience playing valuable snaps. “Just coaching up the younger guys and giving them pointers is big,” senior linebacker Reid Hazen said. “All you can really do (when not playing) is coach them up and try and help them out as much as you can.” Millard West will continue their five game win streak against Lincoln Southwest on Oct. 28, at Seacrest Field in Lincoln.
