The spacious grounds are well-equipped with modern facilities that support a dynamic learning environment and a wide array of sports and arts programs. Millard West High School is a public high school located in Omaha, Nebraska, which opened in 1995. It’s part of the Millard Public Schools district and is known for its strong academic and extracurricular programs. The school was recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence in 2002.

During my time at Millard West High School, the teacher experiences were exceptionally positive. The faculty members were not only well-qualified, but genuinely interested in the success and well-being of their students. Teachers often went above and beyond, offering extra help after class and during free periods. This supportive environment contributed significantly to the overall learning experience.

The food at Millard West was typical of many high schools but with a good variety of options. The cafeteria managed to cater to a range of dietary needs, offering everything from classic comfort foods to more health-conscious options. The introduction of healthier and more diverse menu options was well-received by students looking for more than just the standard fare.

Initially, Millard West operated on a block schedule, which was very beneficial. This system scheduled classes on alternating days, allowing for longer periods that were conducive to a more in-depth exploration of the material. However, the transition to an ABC schedule—where the sequence of classes changed daily—was met with mixed reactions. While it took some adjustment, this new schedule aimed to reduce the monotony of a fixed daily routine and provided flexibility in managing coursework and extracurricular activities.

During my time at Millard West High School, I had the opportunity to participate in the AP Capstone program, which included both the AP Seminar and AP Research courses. In AP Seminar, I collaborated with a diverse team of peers to explore global and local issues, which broadened my perspectives and challenged my preconceptions. We tackled complex topics, integrating different viewpoints and synthesizing information to present coherent arguments. One of the most memorable projects was a group presentation on the impact of renewable energy adoption on economies. Crafting this presentation involved extensive research, critical discussions, and the integration of multimedia elements to support our arguments.

Transitioning to AP Research, I embarked on a more independent scholarly journey. I chose to investigate the psychological effects of social media on teenagers, a topic spurred by my observations and interests. Throughout the year, I dedicated myself to the research process, from formulating a clear, researchable question to conducting surveys and interviews, and finally, writing a comprehensive 4,000-5,000-word paper. The culmination of this project was the oral defense, where I presented my findings to a panel of teachers and experts, defending my methodologies and conclusions.

Speaking of extracurriculars, Millard West offered a wide array of activities that catered to a broad range of interests, from athletics to arts to academic clubs. Whether you were part of the robotics team, the debate club, or the sports teams, there was a place for everyone. These activities not only enhanced our school experience but also helped in building essential skills such as teamwork, leadership, and time management.

The combination of committed teachers, a supportive learning environment, diverse food options, and a rich array of extracurriculars made my time at Millard West both enjoyable and enriching. Millard West’s approach to education, its faculty’s dedication, and the plethora of activities available ensured that my time there was not only educational but also incredibly enriching, leaving me with skills and memories that I carry with me long after graduation. 5/5
