Sophomore Reese Wilson gets ready for a face off against his opponent. Wilson, the captain on the team, leads the team with nine goals and five assists on the season, good for 14 points on the year. “After losing in the state finals last year in triple overtime we were determined to come back stronger even with the loss of six seniors,” Wilson said. “This forced us to work even harder and bond on and off the ice.” The Wildcats take on the Junior Jays for their last game of the 2022 calendar year on Wednesday, Dec. 21st.

West has a difficult season up ahead and coaches and players both notice this opportunity to shine. “We have a very tough schedule this year,” said head coach William Morrison. “Our defense needs to continue to get better. We need to find ways to score more points too.” Coaches aren’t the only ones who see the season ahead as players have a lot of faith for the season. “I feel like we will be able to compete with any team as long as we come to play,” senior Chole Kirschner said. “Once we get our injured players back we should be ready to get some big games.”

Matt Rhule, the newly hired head coach for Nebraska Football, was the first of many in this years head coaching cycle. Other coaches that were hired, and potentially in the eyes of athletic director Trev Alberts include Deion Sanders (Colorado), Hugh Freeze (Auburn) and Luke Fickell (Wisconsin) to name a few. However, Rhule brings the highest floor compared to those coaches, as he has built programs from the ground up, and leaving it in good hands if, or when, he leaves. “We were proud that this team and group of seniors led us to our 12th straight appearance at the state tournament,” head coach Joe Wessel said. “We did some great things but just came up short. I think we made it an exciting game in sets 3 and 4. Next year we have to replace some great seniors but we look forward to getting back to training and helping these student athletes continue to buy into the Wildcat way.”

For their final home game of the season, the Millard West Wildcats (green) took on the Bryan Bears (white) in a senior night matchup. After the half, many of the younger players got more experience playing valuable snaps. “Just coaching up the younger guys and giving them pointers is big,” senior linebacker Reid Hazen said. “All you can really do (when not playing) is coach them up and try and help them out as much as you can.” Millard West will continue their five game win streak against Lincoln Southwest on Oct. 28, at Seacrest Field in Lincoln.

Defensive tackle Hudson Meier and linebacker Braedyn Kiger rally to sack the South Sioux City quarterback. Millard West’s defense was attacking all day and held the Cardinals to just 49 total yards. “It feels great when the defense is able to get the shutout,” sophomore Jake Blackman said. “It gives us the confidence that we can lean on the defense to keep us in the game when the offense is struggling.”
