She has been wrestling for Millard West for a year now and has no plans to leave the team. “I think that's the best part for me. If I don’t get hurt during a match it wasn’t a good match,” senior Ximena Galarza said.“If I get hurt, I know it was a good fight.”

Girls wrestling assistant coach James Ferguson came back from Greece competing in the Veterans World Championships back in October. In his division, he placed second in the greco-roman style of wrestling. He trained his mind and body for months leading up to the competition, and it paid off. “It’s an amazing feeling being invited,” James Fergsuon said. “I’m 44, I was invited to this competition in high school as a junior as well. Looking back, it’s nostalgic, it feels like a dream.”

The Millard West Girls Wrestling team takes on a dual with Marian. With this being the first year of the team they hope to improve and better their skills throughout the season. “My goal for the whole team is to better themselves every day,” senior Macy Klein said. “Wrestling is demanding, physically and mentally,  and I believe that it will make all of us exceptionally better people and leaders. It will show, and has shown, that each of us are strong, capable and resilient no matter the circumstances.”

Celebrating students' progress Halle Opat coaches youth girls wrestling. Opat encourages the next generation of girls to grow wrestling by teaching them. "As I've been coaching I've seen it grow tremendously in the last couple of years on the youth level," said Opat. "it's extremely rewarding to be able to help grow a passion for such an amazing sport."
