Coming in for relief against Elkhorn South, senior pitcher Ben Sterbens looks to close the game out and earn a save. Sterbens has been put in this situation before and would not back down no matter the circumstance. ‘’Getting outs is my number one priority once I step on the mound,’’ Sterbens said. ‘’I trust my defense behind me so I do my best to make it easy on them whether thats a pop-up or a routine ground ball.’’

Senior shortstop Tyson Lewis rounds the basepaths after hitting a huge triple to change the tide after being put in a 4-0 hole. Lewis had the triple but as well as two walks and a hit by pitch, and plated two runs. “Yes I have had a good start to the season, but I am always looking to get better,” Lewis said. “ Sometimes you just gotta keep your head down and focus on your craft.”

Swiercek’s 58 pitches resulted in four strikeouts, and one hit en route to the 6-1 win over Millard North. “It was good to go out and compete for coach Frey’s 300th win,” Swiercek said. “You know a rival like North with a former coach of ours was obviously highly anticipated.”

This wasnt a new situation for the junior, as Venteicher had five saves on the year and looks for more this year. “I put a lot of time this off season into the weight room,” Venteicher said. “We have a lot of returnees and newcomers this season look great. I’m excited because we play the best schedule in the state. It’s gonna be a fun ride and we got some revenge to get this season.”

The boys were both invited to play for Area Codes in California. Its an invite only event, Lewis said. The games are played between some of the best high school players in the country in front of professional scouts.

The Cats erupted for an eight run first on their way to the state title. “I’ve never felt anything like it,” Borner said. “ It’s surreal and I still haven’t fully grasped it yet. This team battled adversity from the end of last year all the way to this final game. I love my boys.”
