The Oktoberfest display in the hallway set up by German club members shows off a unique holiday celebrated in Germany. The display not only gave a visual representation of the holiday but also stated facts to give more information. “We want to spark interest in our German programs and expand students’ knowledge of the world outside our country,” German teacher Andrea Turner said. “And we want to share some fun and create community with the rest of the school. Many students at West have family connections to Germany.”

At the beginning of the event, volunteers lined up at the front of the school to be guided to their job. Helping them find guidance was Rohwers own staff members. Thanks to them the event couldn’t have run more perfectly. “Throughout the entirety of the event, I helped out at the volunteer table, guided families to games, and made sure that everybody was having a great time,” Rohwer Elementary principal Nicole Burton said. “Although, most of all I enjoyed seeing some of my former students come back to help out with our event.”

To participate in Decades Day, sophomore Claire Thornburg, sophomore Emily Sears, and sophomore Greta Olsen show up to school in 80s-inspired outfits. They loved the opportunity to be creative with what they wore. “It was so fun to dress up with my friends,” Thornburg said. “Decades day was definitely my favorite theme of Spirit Week.”

The new mural at Buell Stadium was created by artist Waite White with the idea to convey the values of Millard. White worked with students, staff and faculty to create the artwork and took two years to complete the project, “When I work with a community of people to do a public project I talk to a lot of people, and there is never any understanding of who is going to say something that I need to hear or something that will affect what comes out in the end,” White said. “Its a lot of asking questions and listening hard for the answers, knowing that all of them are personal to the person who is speaking.”

Millard West’s 2021 Homecoming happened on Sept. 25. This years theme was Dancing through the decades. “This years homecoming was definitely something I have never experienced before since this was my first homecoming,” sophomore Macie Rock said. “It was fun getting to see everyone you know having a good time and socializing.”

Students were given the opportunity to head down to the Milford campus to do hands-on activities to help them get a better understanding of what they want to do with their future, some kids were given the opportunity to drive an excavator. The students who attended  this event got a better understanding of what they want to do with their future. “My day at Milford consisted of putting together a foundation mold, a scaffold, I also welded for a while, senior Leo Higgins said. “We had the opportunity to drive an excavator.”

Donating blood for the first time, senior Luke Hudek participates in the fall blood drive. Heading into this experience, Hudek felt waves of emotions but was prepared and aware of the benefits his donation would provide. “Overall I had a good experience, and it’ll be very beneficial to keep donating,” Hudek said. “I want to donate in the future because nothing bad can happen to me and only good things can happen to people who need the blood.”

As the year starts, Educators Rising also begins. Onto their first conference of the year, at the UNO campus, they went their separate ways to learn about the academic field to grow in education. “As far as who plans it, there are Nebraska State officers for Educator Rising,” academy teacher Ali Bragg said. “There are Education Academy students who are currently serving as President and Secretary. They help run and plan events like this.”

The Heart run continues their annual tradition of the kid’s dash across the field. Towards the end of the event the kids line up across Werner Park to begin their run across the field. The dash is something that we have always done at our events Burton said. Its a moment celebrated by the kids to show how far they have come through their CHD journey.
