On Saturday August 31st, the Millard West faced 15 other teams in the “Class of the Metro” meet. The Wildcats placed first in both the girls and boys divisions. The meet was held at the Walnut Creek course in Omaha where most cross country teams have ran before.

Leading up to the meet, the Wildcats trained in many ways to become a better team. They tried different types of workouts to achieve success in the Class of the Metro meet.

As a team we all prepared for the meet by doing workouts the weeks before,” senior Adam Murphy said. “Really just getting back into the groove of things. We did workouts where we would try and pack up and stay with and push each other while running.”

With an average time of 22:31 for the senior girls 5k race, the runners helped the  team take first. They also worked hard leading up to the meet, during the summer the team met in the morning to run.

I would have to say I had to be cautious and know the course because there are 2 hills that can really make or break the meet in a way” senior Alison Fricke said. “We had about three weeks of practice beforehand where we did tempo runs and workouts created by Coach Johnston.”

Millard West had some hard competition at the meet like Creighton Prep, Papillion La-Vista, and Millard North. The Wildcats hardest competition wasnt the other schools, in fact it

was themselves. The team was working toward the Varsity team spots.

“My biggest competition was the other runners from Millard West because everyone wants the top varsity spots,” junior Molly Bies said. “I was also trying to beat my personal times from the previous week.”

After many successful race time the Wildcats were in first place for the girls and boys division. The first meet ended and the Wildcats kicked off the season with a win. The next cross country meet is the Burke Invitational on September 7th at 8:00 am.
