Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
Trying to overcome the secret of magic
December 10, 2018
Drama between muggles (non-magic humans) and purebloods (full blood wizards) has always been a problem and Grindelwald is about to make everything much worse. The movie, Fantastic Beasts the Crimes of Grindelwald, recently came out in theaters everywhere, is a sequel to the movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
Some of the characters of the movie include: Grindelwald (Johnny Depp), Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law), Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), Theseus Scamander (Callum Turner), Credence (Ezra Miller), Seraphina (Carmen Ejogo), and Leta Lestrange (Zoe Kravitz). All of the characters did an outstanding job in Fantastic Beasts Crimes of Grindelwald and i couldn’t imagine any other actors playing these characters because of how impressed I was.
The opening scene showed the criminal Grindelwald locked up at the Ministry of Magic in America. The ministry is planning on sending him to the other location in London, England, and when he was being transported from one facility to the next he escaped. Grindelwald had one of his followers take a potion to look like him so he had a way to escape. Grindelwald and Credence, one of his followers, killed all of the people that were in the car, took off on the carriage and went to a location that no one would suspect.
It was an entertaining movie, but at the same time there were parts of the movie when I was confused on what was going on or what they were talking about (some of the scenes were kind of slow). I would be sitting there and wondering if something exciting was going to show up but it never did. Then the next scene would appear and something exciting would occur.
The conflict of Fantastic Beasts is all about Grindelwald trying to take over the world and how he is gaining more followers to help with his evil scheme. The ministry of magic in London tries to arrest Grindelwald and it does not work out very well which leads us into a new movie that will be coming out.
The movie takes place in the 1920s and I think the director did a great job with portraying this time period. The characters took on their roles and did an outstanding job portraying the time period in which the movie is based off of. The Fantastic Beasts movies are based before all of the Harry Potter movies, when the magical world starts to become more known.
I thought that this was a good way to start the movie just so we could get a feeling of what the movie is going to be about. I was a little shocked to see Johnny Depp playing Grindelwald, but he did a fantastic job throughout the whole movie. I couldn’t have imagined any other actor playing this role just because of how well he did.
Grindelwald is trying to make it so he and his followers take over the wizarding world as well as the muggle world. He believes that wizards are the dominant species of mankind and that purebloods are the rightful rulers; this theme is also seen in the Harry Potter series.
I wondered why Grindelwald wanted to basically take over the world? The movie never really explains what happened to him to make him come up this idea. The movie makes you come up with your own thoughts on what happened. I wonder if he was just naturally evil so he has no real reason to do this or if something occurred in his past to make him turn evil and want to take over both the non-wizarding and wizarding worlds.
One of the main characters, Newt, had a meeting with the Ministry of Magic in London because he wanted to get his travel ban lifted. The ministry did not want to lift the ban because of the destruction that occurred in New York the year before (in the first movie). They blamed Newt for the destruction, and the only way they would lift the ban is if he found Credence and killed him. Newt refused to kill him so the ban was to stay intact.
Newt is a lover not a fighter. He did not want to kill Credence he just wanted to have a conversation with him and try to understand him but that is not what the Ministry wanted. This scene is something that kind of confused me because I wondered why the ministry wanted Newt specifically to kill Credence, and also I wondered if Newt possibly had a past with Credence and if that is the reason he was chosen for this task.
Albus Dumbledore, a teacher at Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry, tries talking Newt into going to Paris where Grindelwald and Credence are, and he tells Newt that he needs to take down Grindelwald. Newt is unable to leave the country but Dumbledore does not back down. He handed Newt a card and disappeared. On the card it showed a small picture of a safe house in Paris that shows where Grindelwald is staying. After giving it some thought Newt goes to Paris.
From what I have seen of Albus he seems like an old soul in the sense that he doesn’t want to hurt or kill Grindelwald himself so he wants Newt to do the dirty work for him. When I saw this scene I wondered why Dumbledore wanted him dead and I also wondered why he couldn’t have done it himself.
Dumbledore was asked by the ministry to kill Grindelwald but he refused because he used to be best friends, more like brothers, and they made a pact that we find out about towards the end of the movie. They became blood brothers and agreed to never fight each other under any circumstance. I think they did this because I have a feeling that Albus knew what Grindelwald had planned. Both of them knew that there is a protector of the Dumbledore family and the protector is a phoenix. A phoenix will come to that person if they need protection.
At first I never would have thought that Albus said no to killing Grindelwald because they used to be friends. I just thought it was because he didn’t want to stir up violence. Then later on when Dumbledore was looking into the mirror you see they used to be best friends and that they made an oath, I was surprised but at the same time it made more sense.
Throughout the movie Grindelwald gathers his followers as well as trying to recruit new people that will help him take over both the wizarding world and the human world.
Grindelwald summons his minions to a meeting as he tries to convince people to join him on his conquest to power. He exposes people to what will happen in the future and how war and death is the outcome if this does not happen. Grindelwald says that if they do not take over both worlds then war will occur and nothing will stop it; so he encourages people to follow him so this tragedy does not happen. The ministry tried arresting Grindelwald in the middle of his speech, but as he holds off the ministry police he tells people to come and join the fight.
He seems like he is a very persuasive person because he convinced a ton of people to join his quest to power. He uses the tactic of fear of the future to gain more and more followers. This would be a good way to have more followers because if they are shown the future they have no choice but to believe that it is going to happen. Fear is the way to get to people and he knew this so he used it as his advantage. If I was one of the bystanders listening to Grindelwald’s speech I think I would have joined him because if I thought that this was the only way to avoid war I would do it.
It seems like Grindelwald has always been a dad figure to Credence since he never knew his family. He was switched when he was a baby when he was on a boat travelling to the United States, and then in the middle of the night the boat began to sink and his family got put onto a lifeboat that sunk so he never got the chance to know them. Throughout the movie he tries searching for his family and at the end of the movie Grindelwald finally tells him who his real family is. Grindelwald explains the prophecy to Credence and he finally understands who his relatives are.
I never would have suspected who Credence’s family is if they never told him the prophecy. In the Harry Potter movies you realize that Albus has a brother so I wonder if Credence is the brother that appears in the last Harry Potter movie. I can tell that the next movie is going to be a very intense movie when everything falls into place.
When I first saw that there were going to be the Fantastic Beasts movie I was kind of hesitant to watch them, because I thought that they should have just left it at the last Harry Potter movie; once I watched both Fantastic Beasts movies my opinion changed and I was impressed with how the directors and characters did. Fantastic Beasts the Crimes of Grindelwald is a movie that I enjoyed watching. It leaves you off on a cliffhanger wanting to watch more and I know that when I saw the movie was over I was wanting to see what was going to happen next. If you are a person that enjoys to watch wizarding movies or even if you enjoy Harry Potter then I would recommend this movie.
