Faith for the Cats

Students meet to talk about the word of God at FCA

Students split into groups to discuss the message of salvation and how it applies to their lives. They eat snacks, get to know each other and by sharing their stories they can walk together in the tough journey of life through God. “My favorite part about FCA is discussing and processing God’s word with others,” sophomore Brianna Jochims said. “And also the fellowship of all the Christians that gather together.”

 Fellowship of Christian Athletes, or FCA, is a fun-filled community that includes everyone, regardless of whether they are an athlete or not. FCA meets every Sunday night, and students have the opportunity to make friends and learn about the goodness of God. 

Students have been involved in FCA at Millard West for about eight years, and God has moved in so many ways since then. To start the night, students compete in games, win prizes and eventually split into groups to share about their walk with God. FCA not only impacts the students’ lives but also the supportive leaders around them.

“FCA played a significant role in my faith journey when I was in high school,” huddle leader Justin Unrau said. “It gave me the courage to share my faith with other student-athletes and students. Today, it’s rewarding to see students grow in their faith journey through FCA.”

The FCA leadership team consists of four students who hope to share their love for Jesus with others. They do their best to include everyone and encourage people to attend each week. The leaders go to different trainings and work hard to make the community a safe place for everyone.

“My leadership training consisted of going to meetings and talking about what it means to be a leader at FCA,” sophomore Nina Saxon said. “These meetings have helped me when I was looking for a way to grow my faith and have a community at school who was doing the same.”

A new topic is discussed each week when the groups split for discussion. Whether it’s receiving the gift of salvation or how to pursue relationships, students can share what their experiences look like.

“FCA has made me more forthcoming and honest,” freshman Asher Akins said. “So far, we have learned about grace and showing it to others even when you might not want to.”

For almost a decade, FCA students have been able to create lasting friendships, win prizes, and have amazing interactions with God. Sometimes, FCA hosts events like Fields of Faith, and guest speakers come to share their testimonies. You can join FCA at their next meeting on Sunday from 8:00-9:00 pm. at 4510 S 167th Ave!

Juniors Issac Cotrell and Will Maddox work on choosing which sound effects would be heard best over both the orchestra and the actors' singing. “I ran the soundboard which included running the microphones for the leads,” Cotrell said. “Turning them on and off and adjusting their volumes if I needed to.” They used websites like Soundtrap to make a lot of the battle scenes or Zapsplat for other ones like rain.
The Miserables
Seventh grader Mae Carmichael and her family get ready to begin the JDRF/Breakthrough walk at Mahoney State Park. The walk began at the activities center and the course was two miles and finished near the sledding hills. “This year's walk was really fun because my cousin brought his dog," Mae Carmichael said. ”We were also able to get snacks and drinks throughout the walk so we were able to stay hydrated and not go hungry.”
Walk for a cure
Before the run begins, senior Chloe Teter and junior Montana Chronister pose for a picture with the handmade signs they made to cheer on the kids. Children dressed up as superheroes for the run to demonstrate the strength people have when fighting through Congenital Heart Disease. “I decided to participate with DECA for the Heart Hero Run because I wanted to volunteer and have fun with the kids with fun activities,” junior Montana Chronister said. “Heart Heroes impacted me because it was so great to see such a close community of people supporting one another.”
Heartbeats and heroics
Sifting through racks of clothes sophomore Madelyn Palacios tries to come across a good find. Palacios goes to the thrift anytime she can since there are always new items coming in. “I think everyone should thrift because not only is it an eco-friendly alternative, but for the most part the clothes that you get, you know it’s because you like them, so it creates a sense of individuality,” Palacios said. “By getting something thrifting you're not just going along with the passing fads and not conforming to trends because they are popular at the time.”
Second-hand the brand
During the after-school meetings, Lillian Gentlemen and her group worked on a huge shark poster to match the theme. They worked on the poster for multiple meetings which were two hours long. “I like being involved with the school, l meeting new people and sharing my ideas. Sophomore Lily Gentlemen said. “We all have our own little responsibilities that we need to fulfill for Homecoming. So for example I made the shark poster so I had to work with a team and make sure it was going to get done in time.”
Preparations and decorations
On stage, Juliet’s actor Lily Lane and Romeo’s actor Henry Hudson talk and flirt at Juliet’s balcony. At the Aug. 29 performance, the cast and crew had rehearsed this play many times already, with the hopes of portraying a heartfelt story, this was their first time performing for a packed theater. “Stay but a little, I will come again,” Lane (Juliet) said. “Three words, dear Romeo, and good night indeed.”
Bravo, star-crossed lovers

Lillian is a sophomore and this is her first year on staff. She loves being involved in the school as she participates in show choir (Uptown), Tri-M, and Millard West FCA. Writing stories and photography are some of her favorite things, and she hopes to entertain readers as she improves her writing skills throughout the year.
