The last time the Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl, Richard Nixon became the 37th President of the United States. It has been 50 years since the Chiefs have won it all and now they are favored to take home the Lombardi Trophy for only the second time in 2020. The San Francisco 49ers on the other hand have been pretty fond to winning the NFL’s most prestigious award. They have won five Super Bowl Trophies, the last one dating back to 1994. Both teams are looking forward to winning to adding on to their championship totals.

The Kansas City Chiefs are led by the 2018 season MVP Patrick Mahomes. In week seven of the NFL season, Mahomes went down with a knee injury that was likely to keep him out for most of the season. At that point a lot of people counted the Chiefs out of even winning their own division. Backup quarterback Matt Morre lost his only start against the Packers, but Mahomes came back the next week and won seven of their last eight games and with some help, they received a first round bye.

In the divisional round, they hosted the Houston Texans. The Texans opened up the game taking a 24-0 lead in the first quarter. Mahomes and the Chiefs quickly responded and took a 28-24 lead in one quarter going into half. The Chiefs were too much for the Texans defense after that and ended up winning 51-31 to advance to the AFC Championship game. The Cinderella team of the playoffs, the Tennessee Titans, were the last seed and defeated the third seed Patriots and the number one seed Baltimore Ravens to get to the AFC Championship. At the start of the game, things weren’t very different than the Texans game as the Titans stretched out to a 10-0 lead, but this time the Chiefs were ready to score on offense and they didn’t let the game get too close and beat the Titans 35-24 to reach the Super Bowl.

The San Francisco 49ers’ run to the Super Bowl was more of an unlikely one compared to the Chiefs. The 49ers failed to reach five wins last year. In what could be one of the best turnarounds in NFL history, they have a chance to win the Super Bowl after a terrible season last year. This year’s success has been on the back of solid quarterback play, an elite tight end, and an amazing defense. The 49ers ended off the regular season with a 13-3 record and a first round bye in the playoffs. In the divisional round, the 49ers took on the Minnesota Vikings at home. It was a back and forth game until San Francisco took over and won 27-10. In the NFC championship game, it was an exciting matchup and the Packers tried to take down the 49ers. The 49ers were just too much for the Packers on both sides of the ball as the Niners jumped out to a 27-0 lead at halftime. The Packers made it interesting towards the end, but San Francisco was able to hold the comeback and defeated the Packers 37-20.

The Chiefs open up as one point favorites over the 49ers, but this is an even matchup. A big problem for the Chiefs is if they are going to be able to get off to a better start than they have the past two games. If they don’t, the 49ers are better than both teams that Kansas City has played and they will make them pay if they get off to a bad start. For the 49ers, is if they can stop Mahomes and get enough opportunities to score. The 49ers are obviously going to have to play their best game of the year if they want to stop the high flying Mahomes. Expect Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce to get a lot of targets as he has 14 in their first two playoff games. San Francisco running back Raheem Mostert is coming off a 220-yard four touchdown game in the NFC championship, he will need to have another breakout game to keep up with the Kansas City offense. It will be exciting to see if any of those things happen and if they do, then it will be a great Super Bowl.
