Millard Education Academy students attend the Educators Rising State Conference at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. At the event, students competed, attended breakout sessions and networked with other students and vendors. “My favorite part was speaking at the opening ceremony,” senior Hope Belcastro said. “I got to use my gavel and that was really fun. I also loved just seeing all the members from different parts of the state.”

Health Science Academy students practice their emergency medical skills in class. The EMT class, taken by seniors, teaches them about everything from taking vital signs to delivering babies. “In my academy class to prepare, we have not only learned the textbook content material, but we spend half of the class working on skills like taking vital signs, transporting patients and setting up airway management,” senior Gwyneth Stocker said. “We also, multiple times a week, do scenarios where someone is a patient, and we are told what happened and their injuries so we can practice going through different assessments and working in a real situation.”

As the year starts, Educators Rising also begins. Onto their first conference of the year, at the UNO campus, they went their separate ways to learn about the academic field to grow in education. “As far as who plans it, there are Nebraska State officers for Educator Rising,” academy teacher Ali Bragg said. “There are Education Academy students who are currently serving as President and Secretary. They help run and plan events like this.”

Aspiring teaching career

As STEM Academy students start off the year junior Grace Tsogbevi works to learn the basics of design. The academy utilizes many different software programs to give students a hands-on experience. “We have been working with the Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software to start to learn the basics of design,” Tsogbevi said. “I am most excited to learn more about the program and be able to shape things and work off the program a little bit.”

New opportunities in STEM

This is one of the academies Millard Public schools offer. Students will be learning in similar ways that high schoolers in the education academy are, but will be apprehending different content. “Its exciting to meet people from other schools who have the same passions as me,” Education academy student Hope Belcastro said. “I like that the teachers push you to do your best and challenge you constantly throughout the year.”
