The Junior and Senior Class Boards at Millard West and South hosted Hoops for Hope the past two years in an effort to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

Different colored T-shirts were sold corresponding to the various types of cancer for $10 each, with tie-dye T-shirts costing $15. The shirts were sold online and from SCB and JCB members in the weeks leading up the event. Once the shirts arrived at West, SCB and JCB members had to sort though the boxes, placing labels on each shirt for those that ordered.

“The fundraiser was designed to sell shirts to students, staff and parents to wear to our basketball game,”  JCB sponsor Megan McEnany said. “The goal is that they’ll wear this shirt to the annual game against Millard South.”

All money raised for shirt sales was then presented during halftime of the varsity boys basketball game to the American Cancer Society on Friday, Jan 19. During halftime of the girls game, a pass the bucket helped raise additional funds. During halftime at the boys game, a check for $2,160 was presented to the American Cancer Society.

“After giving the check to the lady, all of us were extremely proud in what we had accomplished,” Senior Class Board member Annaliese Punt said. “We stood in from of a jam packed gym and showed everyone what our schools were capable of accomplishing if we all worked together.”

The goal is to bring students and staff together and donate even more money to help those in need. Both JCB and SCB look forward to this annual event, next year at Millard South.
