The king is back

After multiple years Fetty Wap releases a new album

Since the album is called “Butterfly Effect” it makes sense that there is a butterfly on the cover. This album is a tribute to rapper Fetty Wap’s daughter who passed away.

Rapper Fetty Wap released a 17-track album on Friday, Oct. 22 titled “Butterfly Effect.” Even though Fetty Wap has a lot of songs in this mixtape, it is featureless, meaning that the only voice that the listener hears is Fetty’s.

Fetty Wap blew up in 2015 when he released his album “Fetty Wap.” Multiple songs in the album reached the top 100. Most rap-listeners have heard this iconic album.

Fetty Wap released “Butterfly Effect” as a tribute to his 4-year-old daughter Lauren, who passed away on June 24 as reported by TMZ. Lauren suffered from a cardiac arrhythmia caused by complications from congenital cardiac anomalies. She was diagnosed at birth.

“Butterfly Effect” begins with an “Intro” and he sets the tone for how the rest of the album will flow. Fetty says multiple times “it’s been seven years, long seven years,” hinting to when he blew up back in late 2014 and in 2015. For the first song, it is very repetitive, but when most artists put an intro into their album they try to tell a story rather than sing a song. In this case, Fetty gets the point across.

The next few songs can be grouped together with a sad flow: “Out The Hood,” “The Truth” and “Remember Me.” In “Out The Hood,” he sings about how his family tries to kick him out of the hood. Fetty also says “I have so many people believing in me. That’s why I keep going.” One of my favorite songs is “The Truth” because of how well Fetty’s voice sounds. His voice is so smooth, and it brings back his 2015 vibe. In “Remember Me” Fetty says he is one of the greatest rappers and I completely agree with him. He set the bar high for other rappers to compete at the time.

Another one of my favorite songs is “They Know My Name” because of the background beat. It starts off relatively slow with a guitar and within 15 seconds of the song the beat drops and his voice comes in. Just like multiple other songs, his smooth voice makes the songs so much better. Fetty Wap has a deep voice but he manages to keep a high-pitched tone and it doesn’t sound like he uses too much autotune like other artists.

In 2015, “Trap Queen” reached number two on the Billboard’s top 100. In “Butterfly Effect” he has a track called “Queen” and at first listen I hoped there would be some connections, but there was none. This one was very hard to follow in my opinion. There was a deep beat in the background and as I stated earlier, Fetty has a deep voice, which he uses. I don’t think the beat went well with his voice in this track, but in all the other songs it sounds very good.

After just about 40 minutes, I reached the back end of the album. One of the last songs is “Feel Me.” It is fast-paced from the start of the song and it makes the two and half minute song just fly by. I wish this song was longer because it was one of my favorite beats.

I would give the album an 8/10. There were some flaws like how it was a featureless album and how the beat didn’t match up with the pitch of his voice. Other than that though, the album was made for a good cause, his daughter, so that gave me more of a reason to want to listen.
