Hidden away in a small strip mall is a hidden gem that serves mouthwatering and tasty food. With their fresh meat, hand-cut fries and various options for the menu, Bigway Chicken and Ice cream is the way to go for Omaha takeout.

Located just off of 96th and L Street, tucked away in the middle of many other restaurants and shops, sits Bigway Chicken and Ice Cream, a chicken and hamburger joint that can be loved by customers of all ages.

They offer various options on their menu. Bigway has appetizers ranging from breaded green beans to Spicy Pickle Fries all for the price of $6.99. They serve rice bowls, salad, sandwiches, burgers, wings and desserts. Some of the most popular options are their chicken teriyaki bowl for $9.99. This includes rice, grilled onions, bell peppers, lettuce and teriyaki sauce. And of course, this also includes their famous grilled chicken. It is possible to choose the spice of the customer’s desire; their spices range from one to 10.

They also have delicious salads such as their Crispy Buffalo Chicken Salad for $10.99. This includes buffalo sauce, bacon, eggs, cheese, onions, tomatoes and croutons all in a bowl of crunchy romaine lettuce.

Their most popular option is a sweet treat called the Ice Cream Sundae for the price of $2.99. Customers can choose the flavor of ice cream, which includes vanilla, chocolate or vanilla chocolate swirl. Then they can select their toppings of peanuts, sprinkles, chocolate syrup and/or caramel syrup.

Because of the outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19), Bigway Chicken and Ice Cream has had to move their restaurant to only takeout and delivery. It’s possible to order the food through GrubHub or their website. The customer can pick it up from the outside of the restaurant or have it delivered.

I love finding hidden gems of a restaurant in Omaha, and after seeing this place, I knew I needed to try it. I ordered the food online through GrubHub and was able to pick it up from the curbside of the restaurant. After much deliberation, I decided on getting the hamburger called the Bacon Cheeseburger for $10.49 with a side of fries. I chose their homemade ranch dressing.

I decided to choose more out of the box sides to go with it besides the fries. I got an appetizer of mozzarella sticks for $6.99, and then for a desert, Beignets seemed like the right choice for $3.99. Beignets are a French pastry that is covered in powdered sugar with a side of chocolate or caramel sauce if desired. I’ve never had beignets before, and I thought it would be something fun to try.

When I got to the restaurant, I was able to sit in my car, and I called the number that was given to me through GrubHub. After calling, they said they would bring the food out to me, and I would not have to enter the restaurant. A very kind and polite employee brought me my food, double-bagged, to me, and also handed me a menu so that I would be able to order from them more and see their daily specials.

I was very excited to try the food, but I made myself wait until I got home before opening the beautiful dishes.

I first tried my hamburger. The hamburger had bacon, cheese, grilled onions, ketchup and mustard. Biting into the burger, I was welcomed by a wonderful sensation of juice and flavor. The hamburger was one of the thickest and juiciest pieces of meat I have ever bitten into. The ketchup and mustard gave it a flare while the cheese was smothered and melted throughout all the toppings so that it was an equal amount. The grilled onions were okay, but I could have done without them as they were a bit thicker than I would have liked and overpowered the taste of my patty. The patty was small in length, but very thick and full in height. It tasted fresh, and it was steaming hot, which I was quite happy about as I had about a 15-minute drive home and was worried my food would get cold. The french fries were steak cut and very crispy. They were seasoned with salt and their seasoning (recipe disclosed).

I then tried the mozzarella sticks, which were evenly covered in breadcrumbs and served with a warm side of marinara sauce. I loved that the mozzarella sticks weren’t stringy when I bit into them. Sometimes when I get mozzarella sticks, I bite into them, and the cheese just gets pulled out, and I’m left with nothing but empty hollow bread crumbs. These mozzarella sticks were easy to bite into, and I got a stable bite of cheese, bread crumbs, and marinara sauce. It was delicious, and I loved it.

The mozzarella sticks. Full of piping hot cheese that clung to the breadcrumbs. With a fresh side of marinara sauce, it was the complete package.

Lastly, I got to try the  Beignets. They were much different than I thought they would look. Looking at them before I bit into them, they looked like a small round piece of bread or pastry dough that was cooked and was crispy and hard to the touch. They were covered in a light layer of confectioners sugar and butter. I was able to dip it in a hot container of chocolate sauce that I got for $1 extra. Biting into the Beignets, I was greeted by a light, fluffy pastry. The inside was almost hollow and looked just kind of like a piece of bread or a bun you would get for the side of a meal, except that it was delightful and mouthwatering. I felt like each bite I took was a taste of heaven. I will say it was very messy, and it got all over my face and my fingers because the powdered sugar was sticky, and the chocolate sauce was dripping everywhere. But besides that, it was one of the best desserts I have ever had.

Overall I would highly recommend Big Way Chicken & Ice Cream. It was a fabulous place with fresh and delicious meat and beautiful desserts. They have many options so the customers don’t have to get just hamburgers or chicken, they can get a salad or rice bowl. I like that they have all those options because it has something for everybody. When I go back again, I plan on getting a rice bowl as I want to see how they mix their chicken and their rice and how that tastes. I recommend this place to anyone who wants to support local businesses or wants to try a new site that has delicious, mouth-watering food.
