Alley and her handler David Sobotka work together in a training exercise to help strengthen her sense of smell. Sobotka tests Alley using evaporated gasoline that he hides in small boxes and waits for her to find it. “Making sure to regularly check up on Alleys sense of smell is paramount,” Sobotka said. “We need her ability to differentiate between odors in a fire investigation, in order for us to determine if an accelerant was used.”
