Many little girls love singing along with their favorite pop stars and making up songs about the things they see out the window, but some take it a step further. Now being involved in numerous music-related activities, senior Emma Morley started singing in a rock band named “The Soggy Phillips.”
Being well trained in her voice, Morley is involved in the top choirs the school offers, the varsity show choir, theater, SNJ singers and takes voice lessons. Her friend and creator of the Soggy Phillips, Mikey Mehlenbacher, saw how talented and expressive Morley was and invited her to join the band.
“I was so excited and so honored cause Mikey had talked about his band to me before, but now it was real,” Morley said. “I really loved performing in that sort of atmosphere and the band I had originally been part of had some personality differences that made it really hard to enjoy performing. It felt right to join in with two of my closest friends, and now I enjoy performing again thanks to them.”
Now being in the band for six months, Morley found the right fit for her, as it let her show off her voice confidently and expressively. Her love and passion for singing led her to something that truly lets her and her fellow bandmates feel appreciated for their hard work.
“My biggest goal for the band is to make it big,” Mehlenbacher said. “I want people to hear our music about our struggles and realize that they’re not alone, as corny as it sounds. I want to make a difference in people’s lives.”
The first step in reaching a wider audience is finding places to perform, which they usually accomplish by seeing ads or posters in need of performers. They also gain more attention by posting on social media and inviting friends and family to come watch their shows.
“It was kinda like whiplash because I’ve only seen her sing in a choir setting, so watching her sing rock was a little disorienting, but it was also really cool cause she did a great job,” senior Zeven Sanders said. “Her personality shows through a lot more when she’s performing rock, and it’s really cool to watch.”
Bonding together and improving every day, the band has been slowly growing and is going to play for the first time out of state in Montana. The band is thrilled to share their voices and music, and will soon be streaming their music on Spotify and Apple Music, as well as having their next gig on Dec. 6 at the Beach House.
