Wildcat Wrestling falls short of Finals

Senior Dominic Humm leads the team to a 10 point victory against Millard South. Humm had 13 points including one three-pointer. Overall, it was a fun game, Humm said. It’s always a good feeling to go out and beat your rival team, especially twice in one year. The game started off a little rocky, but we took control of it in the second half and came out on top.

Schipper and Schonlau combined for 31 points in this game. “We all just played the best we could and never gave up till the end,” sophomore Effie Golliday. “I just hope we can take that momentum to the rest of our season.”

Noah Blair for Millard West wrestled hard against his opponent Angel Mejia from Fremont. Blair was able to pin Mejia for the win, adding to the Wildcats success throughout the dual. “Overall I think our team performed great, we won our last dual of the year and I cant wait to see what districts hold for us this weekend followed by the state next week. Of course we were happy in the moment with our win, but we came back with that winners mentality the next day, there’s always room for improvement and we all know it.”

In a post game interview, Gronkowksi said This whole season the Buccaneers wanted to give everyone on their team opportunities to score. Throughout the season, the players didn’t care much about who scored, they cared about getting the win as a team. “This game it ended up being me who scored more, but that doesn’t matter to us. We did a great job as a team, moving the ball around, and working together to bring home the win.”

Hoffman had six points, as well as one assist throughout the game. “Ive been successful scoring the ball this season because my teammates are always able to find me when Im open, which allows me to get more shots up to score,” Hoffman said. “Ive also spent a lot of time outside of practice trying to perfect my shot to make it more accurate.”

Schollmeyer won the match with a quick pin in the first period. “I think weve had a good season but we could have worked harder and pushed each other more in order to secure our spots at state,” Schollmeyer said. “Ive just been practicing harder and teaching the younger guys new moves and pushing them as much as I can so my legacy at west will be with the next generation.”

Early in the game, the Spartans took the lead and gave the Wildcats a complication. This made Millard West adjust their gameplay to stop Lincoln East’s shots. “Their best player started out scoring the first seven points,” coach William Morrison said. “Most games start off close in the first quarter, so we weren’t worried. We made an adjustment to how we guarded him, and it seemed to work.”
