Senior Kael Dumont pitching in the 5-2 victory against Millard South in the second round of the Metro Tournament. He pitched all seven innings, only allowing the Patriots to score a total of two runs. “It felt like we were finally clicking as a team,” Dumont said. “The week before we went 0-4, so coming out and beating them on Tuesday and then again on Thursday really helped us gel together.”

Gonzaga, led by Drew Timme, and Baylor, helped by Mark Vital, lead their respective teams into battle to try and earn each schools first championship in program history. Baylor came off an impressive win over Houston, whereas Gonzaga came off a thriller against UCLA.

He finished the day only allowing one hit and 11 strikeouts. “After the four losses, our mentality switched as soon as the week started,” Cahoy said. “I think it meant a lot to the seniors, considering it’s their last year and for the other guys with Millard South being our rival made them want to win just as bad as everyone else.”

Wildcats bounce back

Millard West played a tough game and adjusted to different situations quickly. The team is getting used to playing together and is getting better every game. “I think our team continues to gradually improve with our approach at the plate,” senior Corbin Hawkins said. “Slowly, guys are falling into their roles in the lineup and understanding what they need to do to help the team.”

Gonzaga’s 30-0 record is held up by the incredible play of their big three. Freshman guard Jalen Suggs, Senior forward Corey Kispert, and Sophomore center Drew Timme all combine for 52 points a game, well over half of Gonzaga’s NCAA leading 92.1 per game. The top ranked team is just two wins away from becoming the first undefeated champion in over 40 years.

From first four to final four

Senior Corbin Hawkins had a big game against Skutt; he went 2-3 on the day with a stolen base and two runs scored. “I’ve just been trying to have competitive at bats,” Hawkins said. “Winning those 1-2, 2-2 and 3-2 counts, to apply pressure on the pitcher and defense.”

Senior Hunter Sallis puts on the Gonzaga gear for the announcement of his commitment. Sallis averaged 22.2 points per game and won the state championship in his senior year. “I was very glad to hear Hunter is going to Gonzaga because of the high success of their program and also because of getting to know their coaches well,” Millard North head coach Tim Cannon said. “Hunter has meant a lot to me because he is a very good person besides a great player and he has meant a lot to her program as he has helped raise the level of where we are.”

Millard West maintained possession most of the game. Although the team was on top, there were still some things they could work on. “We could have improved on finishing our shot chances, which would have given us four to five more goals, senior midfielder Nasser Nabulsi said. “I think we played well, overall, for our first game and not knowing how solid we would be.”

Boys soccer brings home a win

There was fierce competition in this event and it took a lot of preparation. “I put in countless hours over the winter training for track, and during the spring, Ive been training even harder,” Marshall said. “Having goals and benchmarks set for each week leading up to this meet allowed me to place as well as I did.”
