Donating blood for the first time, senior Luke Hudek participates in the spring blood drive. Walking into the drive with no experience, Hudek’s emotions flexuated but was surprised by the ease that came with donating. “Overall, I had a good experience, and it’ll be very beneficial to keep donating,” Hudek said. “I want to donate in the future because nothing bad can happen to me and only good things can happen to people who need the blood.”

AP Seminar works especially hard throughout their semester to ensure that their AP Test, including a presentation and a written exam, goes well. With the completion of their presentation, they have their written AP exam left. “Our teacher taught us how to format and build our presentations, but in the actual process of researching and presenting, she couldnt help us very much at all,” Junior Elsa Covi said. “Our team multimedia presentations and individual multimedia presentations were part of the AP exams, so she wasnt allowed to give us many pointers and it was important to depend upon classmates.”

One of the stops on the trip was the Beth El Synagogue. Here, they learned about the architecture within and what it means to the Jews who worship there. “The colorful curtains are meant to represent the seven days it took G-d to create the world, and, while it isnt very apparent in the picture, the front half of the seats are in the shape of semi-circles,” senior Deepasri Bylore said. “The seats are a recent change from the original design inspired from the linear seat layout of churches and gives what the rabbi describes as a more personal atmosphere between a congregation and speaker.”

Millard West DECA outside the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in their trip to Atlanta for the DECA International Competition. The event lasted from April 23-26 with the students eligible to achieve widening of their skills in each of their respective topics. “I would really just encourage people to join DECA because it’s a great resume builder. Along with giving students just general life skills that are going to make them competitive in any career,” DECA sponsor Ashley Dworak said. “Really, a lot of the competitions and things we do are centered around business content, but all of the skills in which they’re learning and improving on is really gaining practice for them.”

Millard West concert band, symphonic band and wind ensemble come together for their last performance of the year in the auditorium. The concert was the seniors’ final time on stage. “There were some hiccups here and there, but thats just kind of how it goes, and we recovered really nicely,” senior Sophia Hakeman said. “It was overall a really good performance. The “Irish Tune” was like tradition so that was really nice to finally be able to play.”

The staff took third place overall. “It was good to have awards in person,” adviser Mark Hilburn said. “I think the students deserve to be recognized in person for their work and not in a video a few days later.”

A volunteer at the Celebration of Nations Japanese booth paints a guests name in black ink. Free of charge, every booth had something to offer just like this one, ranging from snacks to artwork. “We wanted children to learn about other cultures and countries not of their own origin,” Black Elk Spanish Teacher Sarah Valasek said. “We wanted families to feel valued and we want all of our students to be represented at this event. Moving forward, our hope and our goal is to make sure every single background and country of origin is represented from a booth, a dance or a food throughout the event.”
