Junior pitcher Dylan Swiercek delivers a pitch during the middle innings. Swiercek’s 58 pitches resulted in four strikeouts, and one hit en route to the 6-1 win over Millard North. “It was good to go out and compete for coach Frey’s 300th win,” Swiercek said. “You know a rival like North with a former coach of ours was obviously highly anticipated.”

Warming up during a pitching change, then junior Nick Venteicher gets ready to close against the Millard North Mustangs. This wasnt a new situation for the junior, as Venteicher had five saves on the year and looks for more this year. “I put a lot of time this off season into the weight room,” Venteicher said. “We have a lot of returnees and newcomers this season look great. I’m excited because we play the best schedule in the state. It’s gonna be a fun ride and we got some revenge to get this season.”

The Cats erupted for an eight run first on their way to the state title. “I’ve never felt anything like it,” Borner said. “ It’s surreal and I still haven’t fully grasped it yet. This team battled adversity from the end of last year all the way to this final game. I love my boys.”

Millard West had a great showing this weekend. Although they came out fast and shut out both teams, they always have ways to improve. “Our team overall can work on feeding off each other’s energy and keep the offense going when there are runners on base,” senior Andrew Tauber said. “I think we all expected to play the way we did Saturday. We all came ready to play and ready to win.”

The Wildcats celebrate a big win earlier in the season against Millard North. This year the Cats finished with a regular season record of 24-5, and they will be a number one seed in their District tournament bracket, however there is always room for improvement. “I think we need to score more runs in the middle innings,” senior Sam Novotny said. “We usually put up runs in the first and last couple innings but I think it would really help if we could put a few more runs on the scoreboard for the middle innings and put more pressure on the other team.”
